June 28 - Summer is here and so are some berries.

Even though the snow melted in March, summer has just officially started. It may have been the longest spring on record here on the Gunflint Trail!

Well the early spring has also brought an early start to the berry season and I do keep track of the berries. The strawberries seem bigger this year and are very sweet! I have already had a handful of ripe, juicy raspberries and it looks like there will be an abundant crop. And then there are the blueberries! The bushes here by us are full of berries and the berries are already quite big. We don't usually see ripe berries here by the Lodge until the end of July or beginning of August but I bet they will also be early. It makes me think that I better make a trip to my favorite blueberry patch very soon as those are usually ripe by the third week of July.

June has seemed cooler than both April and May. According to the local weather guy on Poplar Lake our average high temperature was 66.59 degrees in June and we had almost 6 inches of rain. I can't say that there has been a significant rise in water levels but we are thankful for the rain that we have had. Everything is so nice and green.

There were a couple of nice walleye caught this past week and they were both caught off the cabin docks. Brian in cabin #8 caught a 28 inch walleye and there was a 30 inch walleye caught at cabin #4’s dock. WOW, plan on setting your chair up and doing some night fishing off your dock this trip!

The July 4th weekend looks to be a busy one. Please feel free to call and check on last minute availibility for both cabins and camping. We can also let you know about vacancies at the Flour Lake Campground. Have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend!
